Protests

The bulk of my photojournalistic work has centered around protests, chief among them being the responses to the Israel-Palestine Conflict. As the encampment movement sprang up in universities across America, I documented every step of the way at UC San Diego, where the demonstration remained peaceful until riot police began dismantling the camp, detaining participating students and professors.

Reporting Abroad

I spent the summer of 2024 in Arles, a small town in southern France, renowned for the Rencontres d’Arles and its Spanish cultural influences. I documented matadors-in-training, young men carrying forward a tradition despite controversy surrounding the treatment of bulls. I reflected on the area’s history, its preservation in the depths of the Rhone River and humanity’s long tradition of waste. I reported on how flooding in the early 2000s led to overreliance on tourism, resulting in a loss of community and culture, with higher costs of living for those who remained in the ancient city.

Issues at Home

Strong coastal storms struck the coast of California in the winter of 2023, notably destroying a pier in Santa Cruz. I documented the destruction on the beaches of my home, the Central Coast, where once pristine dunes became mangled hills barely held together by iceplant. I met John, an unhoused man who lived in the dunes of Pismo Beach until his tent was dragged out to sea by the surging waves. Countless people on California’s coast share John’s story, one that will become increasingly common with the worsening effects of climate change.
